52 Totally Practical Poses For Baby Milestone Photos
How To Use Baby Milestone Photo Blocks
Capturing your baby’s first year doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. There are lots of options available to create a cute gallery of baby’s first year. You might even have received a shower gift like baby milestone blocks or a baby milestone blanket. The milestone blocks are my personal favourite. They create a simple way to go through baby’s first year in photos. Plus, they double as a toy ;)
Here’s a look at how we captured baby Devin’s first year using milestone photo blocks. Instead of getting hung up on creating perfect ‘Insta worthy’ photos, I focused on spending time looking at this cute little face. At the end of the year, I had a really great gallery of my baby boy’s first year, week to week.
I love taking photos and I'm always after a new idea to capture memories. I'm not a professional photographer by any stretch, just a Mom obsessed with her kiddos and amazed how much and fast they change.
Ages ago I saw all those Pinterest boards of the perfect weekly baby photos. I totally wanted to do this - but on my terms. I just did my best and didn't fuss over making things perfect. I'm really pleased with how the project turned out. But, I'm even more pleased with the experience I had hanging out with my little guy.

I committed to a photo a week with these weekly blocks for 52 weeks. I don't want to sound too sappy here but I gotta say - it's more than a weekly photo. Making the commitment to take the pics forced me into focusing on my dude for a period of time. Every week we picked out an outfit, we played and took pictures. It really was wonderful.
Week after week, I took his photo. I used the milestone photo blocks that my Mom bought me. There are some great options available through Amazon. Here’s a gender neutral option that I like:
Some of the photos I took are just terrible. But some of the photos are really sweet. Photographing this handsome guy week after week has to be one of my favourite memories of my first year with him.
If you're planning to take on a weekly photo project like this, try out these tips:
1] Set everything up in advance
Do this to minimize annoying your baby. The faster you can do this, the better.
2] Check the technology in advance
Make sure your phone has some battery life and take a test pic to make sure the lighting looks good
3] Use different backgrounds
You can use items from around your house to include in the shoot. I used blankets we received as gifts and area rugs from around the house as backdrops.
4] Use baby's cute outfits
Don't save them for that special occasion. Use them and take a picture - that's why you have them anyways. I love dressing my boys for holidays. I took Devin's photo in those seasonal outfits.
5] Keep the photos organized as you go
I kept all the photos organized in a folder, neatly organized and edited. I knew I wanted to use them for photo projects and having them sorted made it easy.
6] Use the photos for projects
I created a slideshow to play during Devin's first birthday party, using the photos. Since everything was organized, it took very little time. I also printed photo books for myself and his grandparents for gifts.
